The first road to be carved directly across the mountain was the East-West road, also known as the “Bonanza Road” built after the 1859 discovery of the Comstock Lode, today known as Highway 50. With the discovery of the richest silver deposit known in the U.S., Virginia City went from a small town to a bustling metropolis of 20,000, helping gain Nevada its statehood and bringing wealth and culture to the area.
